I am a medical microbiologist who loves delicious food, writing and lists. :)
You know how much I like researching Youtube for great recipes from genuine people who also make me feel good while watching their videos. I just don’t like boring vibes or people who cook just for the video. Recently I found a new lovely Youtube channel that gave me amazing energy (and nostalgia for my childhood). Also, you have to admit the name is truly special: Whippoorwill Holler. Whippoorwill Holler recipes are just a small part of its content. If you are interested in Homestead life and great advice for living a simple life, Miss Lori and Mr. Brown are great at it.
What is Whippoorwill Holler?
Whippoorwill Holler is a Youtube channel dating from 2015. Miss Lori and Mr. Brown are two lovely people who run this channel. They like calling themselves “keepers of the old ways” as they live simply in the Hills of Arkansas. According to their description:
they love to cook
they love to eat
they love to garden
they do a lot of canning and preserving
they love their family
they like to dance
they work hard for a beautiful life.
I was very attracted to their Youtube channel as their vibe is so lovely. Of course, my main curiosities are the Whippoorwill Holler recipes. Even though, I have to admit, I like watching other videos, too. Their energy is amazing and they seem to be really genuine, nice people. I was always curious about canning and preserving as my mother and grandmother used to do this when I was little, so I might just give their canning and preserving recipes a try.
Their Youtube channel has a little over 300k subscribers and hundreds of videos. If you are interested, besides cooking videos, you can find lots of good videos about friendship, religion and general life on the Homestead. There is also a playlist with great Christmas music they saved from another channel! I already love this channel!
Whipporwill Holler recipes
The channel does not have many playlists organizing the recipes, so you just have to scroll through and explore. There are so many inspirational ideas that I decided to create 3 separate lists: Great meal ideas, Desserts, and Canning and preserving. I think this is a great way to categorize everything without missing important recipes.
Great meal ideas
Family recipe – Pea Salad
I already like pasta salads and use peas in my other salads, so this recipe was a very easy-to-implement idea in my household. I loved it. Not to mention it has such a fresh taste it is great for summer!
2. Homemade fiesta bowls
Spending money on Fiesta Bowls in town should become a special occasion, as making it at home is so easy with the right recipe. Not to mention how much money you are going to spare!
3. Chicken fried Steak
Miss Lori is a grandma and has 5 grandchildren. Naturally, her cooking is amazing by nature, just like Brenda Gantt. I feel like every grandma in the world has a recipe for fried chicken and they are all delicious. I wish I could make it my goal in life to try them all. 🙂
4. Cuban Pork Roast in the Slowcooker. Street tacos, rice and beans
A Slowcooker is a great way to cook meat, especially if you need it to be very tender and juicy. This recipe is not just easy to cook but offers you a lot of ways to enjoy the meat. You can also add a salad on the side if you don’t feel like eating rice or beans.
5. Low Carb Tex Mex
I feel so lucky and grateful to have Youtube and an Internet connection, as they have opened my eyes to so many amazing cuisines I had no idea existed until starting my recipe research. Tex Mex is an amazing culinary creation and many lovely ladies online have a recipe for it. In my part of the world, we don’t have it. I will cook it for my friends next time we gather together and see if they also love it!
6. Hard Times Pantry Soup
This recipe really represents the essence of this beautiful family and their channel. Miss Lori has recipes for any occasion and any budget. Moreover, she teaches people useful skills for life. When you have great times in your life you can easily cook great recipes, but when bad times come it is harder to do so. She makes it look very easy! This is truly a great Youtube channel!
7. Slowcooker Italian Gnocchi Soup
Another easy Slowcooker idea for those of us who like putting everything in the pot and forgetting about it! A great idea for autumn/winter evenings.
8. Homemade Mac&Cheese
One of the best comfort foods, Mac and cheese. I feel like this is a great recipe that every grandma has in her arsenal. If you have no idea what to cook for dinner, try a traditional mac and cheese recipe and everybody you feed will be very happy about it!
9. Instant Pot White Beans
Beans are an amazing way to give your body both good quality proteins and fibers. A nice, hot pot of bean soup is perfect for lunch or dinner on cold days. Some people even enjoy cold beans during summer.
10. Beef short ribs in the Instant Pot
This recipe is delicious no matter what you choose as a side. I sometimes don’t eat carbs for dinner so I tried these short ribs with a salad made out of fresh vegetables. Nonetheless, it was great!
Desserts
Yogurt Ket Lime Pie Dessert
A refreshing way of cooling yourself on hot summer days. No baking, no heat, just great taste and texture.
2. Memorial Day Dream Bars
Bars are great not only because they are easy to make and store, but because they are easy to eat on the go. This recipe was new to me. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
3. Strawberry Ooey Gooey Cake
I am sure this cake was made for her 5 grandchildren. I remember when my grandmas made me cakes this way. Children love everything gooey! If you want to feel a little nostalgic, I recommend cooking this. It will do the job!
4. Melting Moments Butter Cookies
Just like Cat’s tongue cookies, I could eat butter cookies any hour of the day or night. Don’t you feel the same?
5. The Best Sweet Dough Recipe – Homemade Cinnamon Rolls
Cinnamon Rolls are great for coffee in the morning. If you don’t like coffee, try them with milk or lemonade.
6. Old Fashion Buttermilk Prune Cake
When I see the words “old fashion”, I know I am up for a delicious treat! Moreover, prunes are great for digestion. Prune cake is delicious with a glass of milk (even vegetable one).
7. Miss Lori’s favorite old-fashioned peanut butter fudge
Peanut butter fudge is a classic recipe that everybody enjoys.
8. 3-ingredient Apple Spice Breakfast Muffins
Another great recipe for breakfast muffins! I feel like I could make a new type of breakfast muffin every day for the rest of my life and there would still be great recipes out there for me to try! 🙂 We are so blessed.
9. Coconut Cream fried pies
A fried pie now and then is a great idea. Just don’t eat them every day :).
10. Pumpkin pie with homegrown pumpkins
Of course, you can try this recipe with store-bought pumpkins, but can you imagine how delicious it is when you use the fruits you grew in your own backyard?
11. Lemon Lush
Another delicious recipe for hot summer days. Stay refreshed and impress your guests with a very easy-to-make dessert!
Canning and preserving
Canning french fries
I had no idea you could store french fries like this! This is amazing for those of you who live in parts of the world where you cannot store potatoes all year round. When I saw the video for the first time I thought I misunderstood something. No! It is just a great way to preserve french fries for later.
2. Canning onions and bell peppers
I feel like you can can (ha) almost all vegetables. If you want to preserve onions or bell peppers for winter, this might be a great way.
3. Canning Italian Beef
Wow! I knew canning was a great way to preserve meat for winter but this looks really delicious. I might try this out of curiosity. Miss Lori is, indeed, a treasure for showing us so many useful recipes.
4. Canned tomato juice
A classic canning recipe that everybody already knows! If you have a tomato garden, why not try it? I am sure it is waaaay better than store-bought. My grandma still cans tomato juice and sends it to me when I run out. I am very serious when I say this, I use it for EVERYTHING!
5. Dry Beans
Dry beans are great not only for their fiber and protein content but for the fact that they can be canned for long periods of time. If you find them on sale at your local grocery store, just buy as much as you can and can them. You will not regret!
6. Turkey and broth
Besides Italian beef, apparently, you can also can turkey and broth. I had no idea, but I will write these recipes down to have them just in case!
7. Caramelized onions
I feel like caramelized onions can be added to any dish and they totally improve the taste. The advantage of canning them in large quantities is that you don’t have to cook a batch each time you want to enjoy them. Just open a jar and store it in the fridge.
8. Squash with herbs and garlic
Squash is a great vegetable for winter. I bet the taste of canned squash is greatly improved by herbs and garlic.
9. Canning fresh garden potatoes
When you want to can potatoes for other dishes than french fries you can try this recipe. I find canning better than storing them in some cold place because it reduces the risk of freezing. It is my dream to move to a house with a pantry and be able to can everything!
10. Sauerkraut
I don’t know how familiar you are with canned sauerkrout, but in my country, we LOVE eating it during winter. We even have recipes for entire meals starting from sauerkrout, like Romanian Cabbage Rolls.
Whippoorwill Holler recipes are not just for cooking or food in general. If you take the time to study the channel thoroughly, you will find great advice for living in a frugal way. Those interested in this type of life will have lots to learn from Miss Lori and Mr. Brown.

I’ve enjoyed your canning/preserving videos and learned lots. I need your help! I canned sauerkraut using your method of slicing cabbage, packing jars, adding vinegar and salt, then processing. It looks beautiful but when I opened it and tasted it’s not very tart/sour. What can I do to fix?
